Human trafficking and exploitation are often perceived as distant issues, yet they are deeply embedded in our day-to-day lives—from care homes and construction sites to the manufacturing of everyday products. You may be closer to it than you think.
Globally, human trafficking generates an estimated $498 billion in annual profits and affects more than 50 million people trapped in modern slavery. The digital age has only widened traffickers’ reach: online scam recruitment rose from 1% of identified cases in 2016 to 8% in 2022.
Demand for trafficking stems from sexual exploitation, labour exploitation, domestic servitude, forced marriage, forced criminality and organ harvesting.
Since 2005, STOP THE TRAFFIK has been on a mission to prevent trafficking before it begins. Central to this mission is an intelligence-led, data-driven approach. STOP THE TRAFFIK’s Traffik Analysis Hub (TA Hub) holds the world’s richest collection of survivor stories and lived experience, enabling the identification of trends, hotspots, and patterns used to disrupt traffickers’ recruitment tactics, finances, and demand.
In 2024, the TA Hub surpassed 8 million data points, identifying 737k unique locations linked to human trafficking and modern slavery. STOP THE TRAFFIK’s prevention programmes reached over 1 million people, arming communities, businesses, and financial institutions with the insight needed to disrupt trafficking networks and drive change.Â

How does STOP THE TRAFFIK connect data to their purpose?
At Anmut, we believe that data can and should help solve problems at both an organisational and societal level.
STOP THE TRAFFIK excels in using data to disrupt trafficking recruitment, people movement and financing. We recognised their success flows from five interlocking strengths—each one a lesson for any data rich organisation with an impactful mission.
1 – Demanding “Intelligence-Led” Impact
STOP THE TRAFFIK insists on impact. Every campaign, every data integration, must prove it disrupts trafficking—no exceptions. This discipline means resources flow only to initiatives that disrupt trafficker activity related to recruitment, the movement of money or the movement of vulnerable people.
2 – Human-Centred Approach
Data without context is noise. STOP THE TRAFFIK’s Traffik Analysis Hub weaves survivor stories into a single, living repository, turning raw figures into powerful testimonies. By prioritising people, they forge trust with frontline partners and ensure every insight carries real-world meaning. Data is being used as part of the language for storytelling.
3 – Visionary, Consistent Leadership
STOP THE TRAFFIK thrives under steadfast direction. From founder Ruth Dearnley’s two-decade stewardship to today’s leadership team, headed by CEO Rebekah Lisgarten, a clear mantra—“use data to dismantle traffickers’ business model”—has united staff, volunteers, and partners. The trust that data leads to intelligence and ultimately action has been the unwavering guiding principle of the organisation.
4 – Collaborative, Multi-Source Data Ecosystem
Where others cling to single systems, STOP THE TRAFFIK bridges data in NGOs, law enforcement, banks, businesses and communities. This “network of networks” approach delivers richer, more timely intelligence, spotting trends that a siloed dataset could not reveal. They forge genuine partnerships that capture and democratise data for everyone in the fight.
5 – Open-Arms Data Sharing
Finally, STOP THE TRAFFIK does not hoard insights – they liberate them. Whether feeding refined intelligence back to grassroots NGOs or equipping global corporations with tactical reports, they ensure every stakeholder gains from shared knowledge. In doing so, they transform data from a private asset into a public good, empowering individuals and institutions.
These five success factors – relentless impact focus, human-first storytelling, unwavering leadership, collaborative breadth, and open data sharing – have helped make STOP THE TRAFFIK a force in human trafficking prevention.
As they continue to scale to new heights, their model offers a blueprint for any organisation seeking to turn data into decisive action across our connected world, in a way that truly honours the stories of the people.
Looking ahead
As traffickers adapt, so too must the tools to fight them. STOP THE TRAFFIK continues to evolve its data and technology capabilities to stay ahead in a fast-moving landscape. Political, economical, social and technological shifts continually change both the demands for exploitation and the profile of prospective victims.
At the heart of their mission is one simple truth: awareness leads to action. By using data to answer key questions – Who is vulnerable? How does this affect me as an individual? What can I do? – STOP THE TRAFFIK is helping individuals and institutions become part of the solution. With continued collaboration, they can strive to dismantle the business model of human trafficking.
